THIS IS IT FELLAS. This is the real thing.Without further ado.YES. It work's with Windows 10. Download the first file available from synaptic its around 120mb give or take. I don't have Windows 8, but I assume it would work the same.
There are several Synaptic drivers to chose from including Windows 8.It took me awhile to understand directions, and fill them out completely. If it doesn't work, then you either missed a step, installed the wrong driver on the wrong input device or something. It took me a little while to figure out. I had to rollback drivers, and use only my keyboard to do so. TAB TAB TAB SPACE ENTER ROLLBACK - WINDOWS KEY RESTART.I just want to say a few things.
Microsoft has continually blamed Dell, saying its a Hardware issue. Long story short, its actually a software driver issue. My scrolling in Chrome is EXACTLY like Edge. And there is a reason to it! Microsoft SCREWED UP.
If you want to really have a read about it, you can read it in the thread below.Optional link - to get the info on why Microsoft screwed up. Watch Microsoft blame the patrons of Dell, blaming the OEM for this problem. It's hillarious and sad.I bought this laptop exactly 5 days ago.
Dell Pointing Devices Software Windows 10
It is brand new. The same day I got it after using it for 8 hours straight, I found it completely unusable. I submitted an RMA out with Dell on it. I still plan on returning it, as I have issues with Wifi and a busted keyboard.
I'm going to consider the LG Gram or XPS 13 Skylake. Possibly XPS 15. (The ones to be released in October) We'll see.
In the interim (for the next 2 weeks while RMA is being processed, I can finally scroll Reddit without LAG)Funny. I submitted the RMA request 5 days ago.
Was told I would receive a reply in 1 business day. I sent 2 follow up emails, and have not heard back even still. If a Dell rep reads this thread I'd like to reply to them with my RMA request. Please send me a PM. I did your homework for you, so that other customers will retreat to returning these devices to you.And yes, I've tried all the Chrome extensions. They are all horrible. They do NO good, infact more harm than not.
Anyone saying those extensions solved all their problems, have no idea what they're talking about. This is a true fix.Dell, if you're reading this. You can tell Microsoft the reason your laptop is NOT rated #1 on Amazon, and because it only has 3 stars average on Amazon, is because of this malicious software driver of a touchpad they forced on you. Not your fault entirely, but your fault for following them and not going with Synaptic or otherwise.I cannot take credit for this. So please, no credit due.I credit (AgentSmith) from the forum below.Follow this to a T. I missed a step on the way, and it added another 45 minutes to my prolonging.
Also, I did step 2 first, then 1. If you disabled Precision Touch Pad (PTP) drivers right off the bat, your mouse will go dead. Install drivers first, then disable per instructions of #1. Your mouse and touchpad abilities MAY go dead, just Windows key and restart.
3 karma points. INSTRUCTIONS.So what you need to do is:1.
Disable PTP drivers2. Install generic drivers (force way).Disabling PTP drivers:Go to device manager and locate 'Human interface devices' node. Locate 'HID-compliant touch pad' item and disable it.
(To make sure, you may open device properties and on the Details tab, Hardware IDs property will have this line HIDDEVICEUP:000DU:0005 - this is how TPT reports itself). Now, in the same node, disable 'I2C HID Device' item.Done. (This is the part I missed, and I couldn't figure out what was going on - I also installed the Synaptic driver - the Autorun executable. Not sure if that was necessary or not, probably not).Installing generic Synaptics drivers:Download generic Synaptics driver here:In device manager, go to 'Mice and other pointing devices' node and locate your touchpad disguised as 'PS/2 mouse'. Select 'Update driver' from context menu and make it hard way: 'Browse my PC' - 'Let me pick it myself' - 'Have disk' - point to folder where you have unpacked downloaded driver into (x64 subfolder, to be precise). Windows will say that driver is not compatible.
That's a lie. You're on generic driver now. Scroll and 2/3/4-finger gestures are at your disposal.During phase #2 Windows may complain about missing digital signature at driver's package (Synaptics' fault).
There are 2 ways to circumvent it:1. Disable driver signature enforcement (just google this whole phrase). This is easy but potentially creates security risk as from now any unsigned driver can be installed to the system.2. Sign it with a valid certificate if you have one (also requires installed WDK).I did mine by signing.inf file with my company's certificate, but I'm not sure if I can redistribute it.From my experience, precision of generic driver is inferior to PTP, but it's free of PTP bugs and offers all extended features Synaptics has to offer. Or maybe it just requires tweaking (it has so many parameters).
Indeed it does. I've tried absolutely everything to try to fix it.Extensions, settings upon layers of settings. Nothing.Until I found the above thread I posted. Which references a Windows 8 fix I believe as the dates posted were pre-Win10 release. Here's a test for you - Open Microsoft Edge, and scroll.Like that? Now imagine that working in Chrome and other apps. It's a software driver issue. It's not actually the hardware.
I'm still not completely inlove with the trackpad, still some hit or miss issues. Unless you're using Internet Explorer or Edge - then you're fine. However, if you're using Chrome or FireFox this is a major problem for alot of people.I ran all the Windows updates last night - happened while I was resetting up the Synaptic drivers - as I had to restart about 5 times. No-go.Mouse sporadically moves position when I start typing, scrolling in Chrome is laggy, Deadzones. Deadzones everywhere (Buzz-lightyear meme).Setting up synaptic not only made scrolling crystal clear, but also made pointing alot more precise.Edit: Ok I just read the part of it being an insider build.
How do you get the insider build? Can it be done through automatic/manual updates - to include 'beta' or 'nightly' builds to that effect?. Did you install the I2C driver from synaptics or the ps/2 and smbus driver? I tried updating to an insider build and while it is better, it's still nowhere near edge.
Also I'm having tons of issues with the trackpad thinking I'm holding down a tap. Really annoying.Edit: download/install the ps2 one.Update - after installing and rebooting, I'm getting some really weird behavior.
Vertical mouse movement is different than horizontal. Vertical is much faster/quicker.
What's going on? I just want my trackpad to work:(. I am not getting any more issues with my tap-to-click sticking, but the control feels off.
You've likely arrived at this blog post as a result of reading the response that you should contact HP for an update to the ALPS Touchpad Pointing Device Driver software. This software is responsible for providing access to enhanced functionality in HP (and other laptop manufacturer's) touchpad devices. The version of the software you currently have installed is not the latest available from HP. To update to the latest version of this software, you should follow these steps:. Navigate to.
Click on the 'Software & Driver Downloads' link on the left hand side of the page. Select 'Download drivers and software (and firmware). Enter your product name (e.g. 'Compaq Presario C700') or use HP's automatic product detection. Select your OS (which is 'Microsoft Windows Vista' if you're seeing this response).
Find the section titled 'Driver - Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices'. Click the link titled 'ALPS Touchpad Pointing Device Driver'. Under 'Step 3: Obtain software:' click on the filename (e.g. 'sp38629.exe') or click the 'Download only' button. Download and run the file, following the instructions in the setup utility after the program begins executing. You may have to restart your computer at the end of this process.Hopefully this process won't be too difficult, and you should stop seeing errors related to this software after applying this update.
If you do encounter problems, or feel that the response or these instructions can be improved, please leave a comment here on the blog. You can also contact me directly via email at.Additionally, if you've reached this response and your computer is not branded HP or Compaq, I'd like to hear from you! Hi Johnie,The basic operation of the touchpad may not be affected by the driver failure.
If the failure isn’t causing you any actual problem (aside from the error notification), you should feel free to ignore it. If you later find that your touchpad isn’t operatingas expected after seeing this error, or if the error popups are annoying, you should upgrade the touchpad driver to correct the software problem. You can download the updated driver using the steps above or by visiting this link:Please feel free to post again or email me if you have other questions or concerns.Best regards,Matt. I have an Alps driver enabled touchpad in my Dell M1530 XPS laptop. All was fine until Vista decided to update on its own installing the followingKB50582KB951978KB955020KB890830KB941833The lappy was supplied with vista hoe premium 32bit at SP1After Visat updates my touchpad and mouse would input intot eh lappy continuous right clicks even though there was no user input.Anyone else get this?Anyone now how to stop it?I have Alps driver 7.1.1500.2TIABarry Barry was able to narrow this problem down to the presence of some beta add-ons he’d installed previously for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Removing those add-ons stopped the aberrant touchpad behavior. I also do not SEEM to have a problem with the pointer. I see I have quite a list of times it has occurred. I am new to computers so will ignore future notices that it has stopped working.
Do you agree? Ultimately, you have to decide whether or not updating the driver makes sense. If you’re not bothered by the error messages, it’s certainly reasonable to decide not to install an update. Personally, if it were my system I would update it after being sure I could roll back to the previous version in case I experienced a worse problem with the newer driver. You should feel empowered to decide whether or not to install an update on your system.
My Touchpad is not working at all. It works with the mouse only. Install and download all done.
Still not working. My pointer is not moving at all.
Compacq Presario C751NR If your touchpad isn’t working at all, it’s probably not the result of this issue, and installing this update isn’t likely to make it start working. If your touchpad was working prior to installing this update, please send me. Otherwise, your best bet is to contact HP for support, which you can do by followingand choosing your language/region.-Matt. I have an Alps touchpad in a DV4000 HP laptop. If I plug in a USB mouse it works better for CAD drawings. When the USB mouse is unplugged the mouse driver stays as a PS-2 and I have to reinstall the Alps software to recover the touchpad. This is DUMB!What’s the fix?
You will most likely need to work with to determine the cause for this. One thing you might try is uninstalling the ALPS driver altogether and seeing if the same problem occurs with the built-in driver. Please feel free toif you have trouble contacting HP or if there’s anything you think I can do to help.-Matt. What’s wrong with this?! Internet Explorer cannot open the webpage when I try to download the update, but I’m not sure it would even have helped in the first place!
The error report claims that the ALPS device is no longer working, and I can continue touse the touchpad–but without the convenient scrolling capabilities. Any clue what is wrong with this stupid piece of machinery?! As you noted, the ALPS driver provides additional functionality for the touchpad. The touchpad itself will continue working when the ALPS driver fails. The download fromappears to be working. Pleaseif you continue to encounter problems getting the updated driver.-Matt. The whole computer just shuts down or cuts me off the web in the middle of typeing an business email notes It sounds like you may have a problem, or possibly multiple problems, that extend beyond the touchpad driver.
You should certainly update that driver if you’re reaching this response, but I would not expect it to fix shutdown or disconnection issues.I would recommend that you contact your computer’s manufacturer to do some in-depth troubleshooting to try to diagnose the problem(s). You can find a comprehensive listing of contact information for various manufactures at.-Matt.
I’m experiancing the same erratic behavior Annie is having. The curser just goes crazy from time to time. Of course a call to tech support is of very little help – upload the latest driver (which I’ve done several times), and adjust sensitivity (doesn’t explain the zigging left when I’m trying to go right). This has been going on since day one (clean install, so not a conflict with other software). I can only recommend working with the manufacturer to remedy the problem. If it’s a hardware problem, they should be able to repair or replace the defective part.
It is definitely not the same issue discussed in this post, and as much as I would like to be able to point you to a silver-bullet answer, I am afraid I cannot. That link matt’s sending everyone to so they can down the proper driver, beware your mouse will work worse than it did before you 'update' it. This thing is screwed up big time. And who the heck ever heard of 'ALPS' anyway; why didn’t they just usesynapics or whatever that one is that everyone else uses that works like a charm. I’m angry This is the first I’ve heard of degraded behavior after installing the update.
I’d like to hear more about it and would be happy to help if you’re still having problems. I don’t think the blog is the best avenue to troubleshoot it, so if you couldemail me ( ) I would greatly appreciate it.-Matt. Hey Matt,I have a Compaq Presario C700 – Windows VistaI used the link you sent in a reply to Maureen on Thursday, June 26, 2008 3:27 PM. I downloaded and restarted my computer and my touchpad scrolling works again after receiving my usual error. Restarting always fixed this problem temporarily, but I was hopingthis update would permanantly fix it. Anyway, I can no longer see my 'network' status in the notification toolbar.
How do I fix this. When I try to add 'network' or 'volume' to the toolbar, they are shaded and I’m unable to check those boxes.
Or how doI undo the driver update I just went through? Thanks for your help. Please give this KB article a try:. This should re-enable the notification area icons, or at least allow you to add them back. With regard to undoing the driver update, I believe there should be an entry in the control panel’s Programs and Features section for the 'ALPS Touchpad Pointing Device Driver'.
If not, it appears as though an uninstallation utility named 'Uninstap.exe' shipswith the driver package, and running that manually should uninstall. That utility should be located where the driver files were installed, which by default is C:Program FilesAPoint. If you still have trouble, please feel free to me. – Matt.
I had the same problem. Very erratic pointer at times. (I have the Compaq C700 series laptop) After many failed attempts to fix this including reinstalling the latest driver, I uninstalled it again and replaced it with the old original driver and so far its working well. I did this by going to control panel, then device manager, then to mice and other pointing devices, then I double clicked the Alps Pointing device.
I then clicked uninstall driver and when a pop up box asked I also checked uninstall software too. Then, at reboot it automatically installed the original driver.
The first time I tried to go back to the original driver I did not check the box to uninstall software too and the latest driver re-installed instead of the old original one. Hope this helps someone if nothing else does.
I can’t believe someone else is having the same problem i’m having; hp tech acted like it was all new to him. My cursor just seems to have a mind of its own.
Problem is, this is the second computer i’ve had, both hps, that experiences this problem. Got rid of the first one; my daughter bought me another & same problem. Most individuals i talked to seemed to think it was me. Couldn’t find a way to cause it, never mind stop it. This problem is deadly.
Can’t retire another computer, just not that rich. Can’t find help at hp. Any other suggestions; taking a standardized test in july and need my computer but this problem causes big problems and drives me insane.marj. Igot COMPAQ LAO TOP its about ALPS so please can you fix this problems when Igo to eny page they block me, please. It’s not clear to me whether you mean you are having trouble downloading the ALPS update or whether you have problems accessing web sites in general. It’s hard to offer a good suggestion without a more precise understanding of your problem, but youmight try using Internet Explorer in no add-ons mode to download the update, if that is what you are trying to do. The shortcut for no add-ons mode can be found under the Programs menu beneath Accessories and System Tools.
Please feel free toif you need further help.-Matt.
